Frequently Ask Questions
When do I need a certificate of UK residency to be apostilled?
To prove your tax residency in the UK to avoid double taxation in the country of origin the UK residence certificate must be legalised by way of hague apostille.
Further legalisation is required if the certificate will be used in a foreign country that is not a member of the Hague Convention. You might want to claim tax relief and use a double taxation agreement with your country. The UK tax resident certificate will help you with overseas authority dealing.
Foreign tax authorities require proof of your UK tax residence.
Do I need to attest my residency certificate to the embassy or consulate?
That depends if the country where are you going to use your certificate is a party to the Hague Convention Abolishing Foreign Legalization. If the country has signed the agreement, apostille is the only requirement.
All UK public documents for international use must be legalised by competent authorities in the UK. All foreign public documents must be legalised in the country of origin. Apostille certificates issued by the Hague member state are recognised in the UK.

HMRC issues a certificate if you have spent 183 days or more in the UK during the Tax year.
Your only home was in the UK for 91 days or more in a row, and you visited or stayed for at least 30 days of the tax year.

Whats the difference between a Letter of confirmation of residence and a Certificate of residence
A “Letter of Confirmation of Residence” is issued when you do not have any foreign income but need proof of residence from an overseas tax authority. This could be required due to local laws in the foreign country.
Certificate of Residence is issued when you have foreign income that is declared taxable in the UK. This document is necessary to prove your tax residency status in the UK to foreign authorities for tax purposes.
In both cases, the same application form is used. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will decide whether to issue a “Letter of Confirmation of Residence” or a “Certificate of Residence” based on the information you provide in the form.
